Want to be part of the Met’s counter terrorism efforts? Ready for a unique and interesting role? Join us as a RIPA Compliance Officer and help ensure that our covert operations remain within the law.

To combat today’s terrorists, we need to carry out all kinds of covert activities – but there are strict regulations we need to observe including the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA). You’ll be part of a team that manages the legal aspects of our Counter Terrorism unit’s work, responsible for advising operational officers who are making RIPA applications and explaining the requirements.

When an application is submitted, you’ll provide quality assurance to ensure it meets all set guidelines. You’ll also be in close contact within the wider Counter Terrorism network, making sure our efforts are co-ordinated with broader policing. It’s your chance to help us combat the terrorist threat – and keep Londoners safe from harm.

To join us, experience of covert policing or the legal sector is desirable. We’re also looking for excellent IT skills including Microsoft applications, plus natural teamwork abilities. It’s important that you can work with officers and staff at all levels and explain legal concepts, using strong communication skills. If you also thrive when the pressure’s on, this could be your ideal role.

Please note that this role is subject to security clearance. Minimum posting period: two years.

Vetting

This post will require you to hold National Security Vetting (NSV) at Developed Vetting (DV).

The post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) before taking up the post. Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.
